My name is Elizabeth Bossie and the name Gloam Envy comes from one of my favorite artists' songs: Remembered by The Dear Hunter. But the words alone contain a certain unexplainable aura.
The word Gloam has a curious feeling to it before you even realize what it means and by definition that is, dusk or twilight. That time of day is one of the most remarkable, also bringing with it, a feeling. The moody colors of the sun refracting the earth's atmosphere is probably one of our greatest gifts on this planet. I always attempt to capture that enigmatic feeling in my photos.
The word Envy has a certain reputation for mischief but I like to look at a different side of that reputation. I think a healthy dose of envy can inspire you to work harder, push yourself to different goals and maybe even help you achieve them.
I have been shooting photo ever since I can remember and growing up, photography was all around me. My grandmother always had a camera in her hand and now those memories live on in the form of 4x6s and 35mm negatives. I believe this is why I have a somewhat unique interest in film/analog photography and love shooting portraits. (#filmisnotdead)
I found a renewed love for photography in high school and received my first 'real' mid-range film camera, a Nikon N70, which I still shoot with today. I've almost always shot film and have forever loved the glow the photos seem to have.
I studied two years at Pitt Community College and received an Associate in Arts (AA) I took every photo class available there and was very fortunate to meet a wonderful teacher and mentor who taught me almost everything I know.
I also worked two years at ASAP Photo & Camera where I was first a Lab Technician Assistant and later spent a year as Lab Production Manager. This experience gave me even more experience and knowledge and has brought me to where I am today with my photo related capabilities.
Before I learned the very basics in college, I was self-taught and gaining the intricate details of the fundamentals was extremely important to me. After many assignments, I soon went on to learn about and produce fine art photography, a very important aspect of the photographic medium.
Additionally, I finally got to learn about darkroom analog processing and the old ways of photo. I had always dreamed of processing my own film and making prints by hand, and I was lucky enough to be in the right place.
After college I then went on to ASAP Photo which only solidified and built on the things I learned in school. The experience I gained at ASAP showed me a different side to photo, the client side. People who care about images and the feelings & memories that are contained in them.
I soon learned what people looked for in the images they brought in for printing, restoration or framing. It was then that I realized how important this medium of work is and what it means to the masses.
Being able to capture others' closest connections and relationships is the main goal of my work. My hope is to create content with you that will hearten you with the memories I have captured. I enjoy shooting for others because I see how much the images mean to them and what they represent. I do believe in 'living in the moment' but sometimes it is really gratifying to capture that forever.
I hope that we can work together and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
